Robbie B. Leonard, PT, MS is a Physical Therapist.  Mrs. Leonard received her B.S. Degree in Microbiology from Clemson University and her M.S. Degree in Physical Therapy from Duke University and has over 22 years of clinical & administrative experience in various rehabilitation, educational, and administrative positions, including the Shepherd Center, Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation and The Medical University of South Carolina.  She currently serves as the Vice President of Talent & Development for Proaxis Therapy and Howard Head Sports Medicine.  Mrs. Leonard has extensive experience teaching administrative content and has taught courses on Medicare and reimbursement for over 14 years.  She has received several teaching awards including the 2008 SC AHEC Educator of the Year, the 2003 J. Dale Pounds Award for a person who makes significant impact on the physical therapy students of Western Carolina University, the 2000 MUSC College of Health Professions Teacher of the Year Award and the 2000 MUSC Health Science Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award for Developing Faculty.

Course Description:

This course is designed for outpatient physical therapists, and occupational therapists and outpatient therapy office managers and office staff who are interested in learning more about 3rd party payment systems and the Medicare system and the mechanics of reimbursement for therapy services.  The course will include basic insurance concepts, CPT Coding, explanations of Part A and Part B Therapy Providers, and the rules and regulations of Medicare services in the outpatient environment.  There will be an emphasis on coding for proper reimbursement, LCDs, CPT codes, the eight minute rule, the relative value scale and the latest Medicare issues will be discussed.  Staying current with 3rd party reimbursement and Medicare is crucial to success in the therapy market.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Define common insurance terminology and apply those terms to therapy practice.
  • Distinguish between types of therapy providers (private practice, rehab agency, etc)
  • Outline the various rules that govern outpatient therapy services under Medicare including National Payment Policies and Local Coverage Determinations.
  • Understand the Therapy Cap and the Cap Exceptions Process for Medicare.
  • Define the 8 minute rule and reimbursement rules for Medicare and 3rd party reimbursement.
  • Utilize CPT codes appropriately for outpatient therapy services.
  • Identify best practices for insurance verification and “front desk” practices.
