HHSM Builds with Habitat for Humanity
A total of 14 Howard Head staff, along with friends and family, participated in two build days with Habitat for Humanity during September and early October. Both teams worked on one of eight duplexes currently under construction in Edwards, Colorado. These new homes will house 16 deserving local families.
Volunteers were put to work- completing interior framing, installation of foundation flashing, dry wall, and siding. Despite some chilly weather for one of our teams, Howard Head staff were excited, enthusiastic, and happy to be a part of such a great team effort and community contribution!
Rocky Mountain Hockey Camp
During the last week of July, Howard Head Sports Medicine participated in the Rocky Mountain Hockey Camp at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena. Thirty kids, ages 8-15, participated in a variety of dry land training activities and were challenged with a multitude of exercises to help them improve their on-ice hockey skills. The week’s highlight, a trail run along Illinois Creek, had kids answering trivia questions while racing along the trail. According to Terri Stashick, Howard Head Physical Therapist and organizer of the dry land activities, “the staff had a great time at the camp and really enjoyed working with the kids.”
“Howard Head Sports Medicine enjoys the opportunity to support local community programs”, says Jen Gotantas, Regional Director for Howard Head. “We feel it is our responsibility, as a leader in Physical Therapy in Summit and Eagle Counties, to respond to the community’s needs and requests and to serve as a resource.”
According to Rocky Mountain Hockey Camps director, Bryan Smith, “You guys lead the way and are very important to the camp!”
Ninth Annual Teva Mountain Games Bring Out Our Best
The staff at Howard Head Sports Medicine not only provided medical coverage at the 9th Annual Teva Mountain Games, staged in Vail June 3 – 6. Several exhibited their skills as participants in the Games!
Each year, the event attracts professional and amateur athletes from around the world to compete in eight sports and 24 disciplines, including kayaking, bouldering, mountain biking, and trail running. We are proud that six HHSM employees represented the Vail Valley and provided fierce competition to other competitors.
Paul Bersagel and Jennifer Sewall cranked their pedals up Vail in the Volvo Cross Country Mountain Bike Race; Connor Hay and Mark Ryan competed against professional trail runners on steep and undulating terrain; and Brittney Huntimer completed the Vail Pass Marathon after climbing more than 2,500 feet!
HHSM’s Nico Brown, who competed in the advanced bouldering event, ran into some tough competition. “I was up against professional climbers as young as 20 years old. Having a full-time job doesn’t leave me with a lot of free time to climb.”
According to Topper Hagerman, a founding partner of Howard Head Sports Medicine, “Our employees live in Colorado because they love the outdoors. Our motto is ‘Work Hard, Play Hard.’ I’m proud to see Howard Head represented at the Games both in competition and on the sidelines.”
HHSM On-Site at WECMRD Eagle County Lacrosse Jam
Howard Head Sports Medicine volunteered their services at the WECMRD Eagle County Lacrosse Jam on May 8-9, working with over 50 youth teams to meet their sports medicine needs. Howard Head Sports Medicine supplied first aid needs for participants and spectators out of their mobile sports medicine unit, which was staffed by athletic trainers and physical therapists.
“Howard Head Sports Medicine enjoys the opportunity to support local community programs”, says Brandie Yeik, Athletic Trainer for Howard Head. “I had so many parents and participants thank us for being involved in the tournament, I think it gives them a strong sense of safety knowing that there are health professionals at the tournament in case an injury happens.”
According to WECMRD Tournament Director, Brad Johnson, the event was a roaring success, and one of the largest turnouts in the events history.
Clark Mercer a coach for the Eagle Bandits second and third graders says, “It’s nice to have the trailer, and know that you can just walk over and get check out.”
