Our Services
At HHSM, we offer the highest standard of quality service backed by advanced research and proven techniques. We are proud to offer our world-class treatment to patients of all walks of life—from elite athletes to everyday people.
Our services include physical therapy and occupational therapy for the treatment of the following:
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy (PT) is a unique science and art that utilizes a wide variety of procedures to restore function to the body, reduce pain and help prevent future injury. Under the supervision of a Howard Head Sports Medicine Physical Therapist, specific patient goals are determined and a customized treatment plan is created to address these goals. Various physical therapy modalities and techniques may be utilized during treatment, including, traction, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, ice and heat, with a focus in therapeutic exercise and manual therapy.
Occupational Therapy
The primary goal of Occupational Therapy (OT) is to enable people to participate in activities of everyday life. Whether in a patient’s hospital room or in a Howard Head Sports Medicine clinic, our Occupational Therapists will work to achieve this goal. By reducing pain, assisting functional movement through adaptive devices or ergonomically modifying a patient’s environment, Occupational Therapists enhance a patient’s ability to better support participation and regain the life they once knew before injury.
Hand Therapy
Our highly skilled hand therapists are proficient in the treatment of hand and upper extremities. At the first visit, a patient undergoes an initial evaluation and an individualized treatment program is designed, in conjunction with a physician’s prescription, to meet the patient’s specific rehabilitative needs. Conditions treated include, but are not limited to arthritis, fractures, tendon injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, crush injuries and repetitive motion disorder. The scope of hand therapy services offered include: wound and scar management, edema control, pain control, range of motion exercises, strengthening, static and dynamic splint fabrication, and dexterity training among others.
Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Our team works with individuals who have undergone a total hip or knee replacement, sustained trauma to a bone, or have a bone or soft tissue disease. The Orthopedic Rehabilitation uses a standardized, functional and outcomes-oriented approach to care that focuses specifically on the injury or surgical need. We focus on helping patients regain their strength, mobility and endurance so they can return home and resume their regular routines.
Sports
Through an active and educational continuum of treatment, our therapists assist the patient in returning to normal, daily activities as soon as possible. By providing comprehensive education in anatomy, pathology and care of the specific sport injury, the patient is empowered to participate in his or her recovery and in the prevention of future injury.
Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy incorporates the properties of water to positively impact movement, strength and function. Water is a safe and effective medium to exercise specific muscle groups and joints with substantially less compressive forces than other types of exercise. Aquatic therapy techniques are designed to move against the buoyancy of water, facilitating exercise by making movement easier and less painful. We utilize techniques that build on water’s natural resistance to improve quality and strength of movement. The therapeutic, non-weight-bearing properties of water create an ideal rehabilitation environment, especially for post-operative patients or those with back injuries.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
The vestibular rehabilitation program is designed to help people suffering from dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and other inner ear disorders. Vestibular rehabilitation is a conservative, non-invasive and drug-free option for combating dizziness and balance difficulties. A clinician will develop an individualized treatment plan that includes exercises to strengthen posture, gait and components of the balance system (eyes, ears and legs). A home exercise program may be designed specifically to the patient’s tolerance, physical condition and diagnosis.
Women’s Health Program
The Women’s Health Program at Howard Head Sports Medicine is a special type of physical therapy that focuses on improving the health and fitness of women throughout all the phases of life. Each patient receives a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation, assessment of the pelvic floor for muscle strength, spasm and function, one-on-one instruction by a trained Women’s Health Physical Therapists and an individualized treatment plan to help meet their goals. We provide evaluation and treatment for urinary and fecal incontinence, pregnancy and post-partum pain, overactive bladder, pelvic pain, prolapse, interstitial cystitis, coccyx or tailbone pain and abdominal or pelvic muscle weakness.
Pilates
Pilates based physical therapy is based on the small, patient-centered, movement-oriented approach to physical therapy that can offer patients an unrivaled possibility for healing. Treatment is grounded in the therapeutic movements and techniques of classical Pilates as well as traditional physical therapy modalities. Patients become an active participant in their care through education about maintenance and injury prevention, allowing them to gain maximum benefit from the therapy while empowering the ability to maintain strength and flexibility long after therapy ends.
